How to invest in ETFs ?

Through a Stockbroker Through an Investment Plan Still not sure?

Stockbroker

A registered member of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (i.e. a stockbroker) can carry out your buy or sell order through the JSE's trading system. As with any share transaction, your stockbroker will find a sell order in the market that will match against your buy order. Where the market does not provide an instance match, our market maker will provide liquidity, thus ensuring there is always a counterparty to either buy or sell any of our ETFs you are trying to trade.

If you would like to open a stockbroker account please click on the following link to be taken to the contact list of all registered Stockbrokers of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).

Still not sure which option you want to use for investing in ETFs?

The best option to invest through depends entirely on the circumstances of the individual.

It is generally cheaper to invest through an investment plan when an investor would like to invest small monthly amounts via debit orders and/or when smaller lump sums are invested, and through a stockbroker for larger investments.

The reason why it is cheaper to go through an investment plan for smaller investments is because all clients’ trade orders are bulked by the investment plan service provider enabling for smaller brokerage fees to be negotiated with their stockbroker and for the minimum brokerage fees, that are generally charged by most stockbrokers, to be dropped.

For larger trades it is generally cheaper to go the stockbroker route as the minimum brokerage fee hurdle would not be applicable and there is generally no annual administration fee charged by stockbrokers.

For investors who feel more comfortable getting advice it might be a better option going through a financial advisor, the benefits of which include:

  • You have a financial professional guiding you in making investment decisions.
  • You have one person you can go to get information and advice concerning your investments.
  • It's convenient. You don't have to spend time doing research and executing trades – someone is doing that for you.
  • You have (or should have) an unemotional, third party advising you, helping you to leave out emotions of your investment decisions.

This option is generally the most expensive route due to the fees you pay for this advise, but is often worth it.
